Biomedical Treatment of Pain Pain can be caused by overuse, traumatic injury, repetitive injuries, chronic inflammation, arthritic diseases, even a poor diet can lead to pain in the body. Biomedical approaches to pain include surgery and anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drugs. Many studies have shown that surgery does not always improve painful conditions and can often exacerbate a problem; if you are considering surgery for your pain condition, have a serious and thorough discussion with your Medical Doctor on the benefits and risks, along with possible side effects.
Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), such as Advil (ibuprofen), can be helpful for short term pain management but have many adverse side effects if taken regularly or in large doses. Some side-effects of NSAID may include:nausea, gastrointestinal ulceration/bleeding, raised liver enzymes, heart failure, worsening of asthma, correlated with increased risk of hypertension, heart attack, and may other adverse problems. Another common pharmaceutical drug for pain management is acetaminophen (Tylenol). Acetaminophen is metabolized by the liver and is hepatotoxic, other side effects of use may include: stomach bleeding, kidney damage, increased risk of blood cancer, and a study in 2010 show that use of acetaminophen during pregnancy has been linked to infertility in the subsequent adult life of the fetus.[1] Acupuncture is a natural alternative to harsh biomedical treatments.
A Biomedical Perspective on Acupuncture for Pain Management Acupuncture for management of chronic pain conditions is one of the most clinically studied uses of this 3000 year old medicine. The World Health Organization states that acupuncture has been proved-through controlled trials to be an effective treatment for many different types of pain, including knee pain, lower back pain, neck pain and sciatica (for more information click here).
The modern scientific explanation is that needling acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. Acupuncture reduces pain biochemically by instigating our bodies create these chemicals that can change and reduce our perception of pain. Some of the natural chemicals released from acupuncture include endorphins and dynorphins, which are natural powerful painkillers. Endorphins are 18-50x stronger than morphine and dynorphins are 500x stronger than morphine. Acupuncture also increases the release of nitric oxide throughout the body, which causes blood vessels to relax and widen. If your pain is muscular, when muscles are injured and strained it can tighten and pull your joints out of alignment, causing a lot of pain. Acupuncture can be used to relax and trigger muscles to fasciculate and restore balance. There are more and more studies coming out on the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain management.
Acupuncture for Pain: Traditional Oriental Medicine Perspective Pain can stem from many factors and have many causes according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Our body is meant to have uninhibited flow of energy in order to be in harmony and balance. However, many factors can lead to the body not flowing properly, such as overuse or trauma. When there is a blockage in flow, this causes pain. The blockage leads to lack of nutrients (qi, blood, oxygen) in our cells, tissues, organs, and glands. One of the most common diagnoses given for chronic pain is “Qi and Blood Stagnation. Qi stagnation is a dull aching pain that can travel to different places in the body, it is improved with movement of the body. This type of pain is commonly caused by lack of proper physical activity, such as continuous computer usage at a desk job. Blood stagnation is a stronger and sharper pain, which can be caused by trauma or continuous qi stagnation. The goal of acupuncture for people with this diagnosis would be to invigorate and move qi and blood to reduce pain. The insertion of hair-fine sterile needles into targeted points can help achieve this goal. Acupuncture can break up blockages that have hindered the flow and harmony of your body, resulting in lasting pain-relief and a more balanced body.
There are also many other diagnoses for people who suffer from pain, such as Kidney Deficiency, Wind Cold Damp Bi, etcetera. When you are in pain, acupuncture is the best possible way to get pain relief without putting toxic drugs into your body or getting traumatic surgery. Acupuncture also increases well being and relaxation to help improve sleep, which is the most important time to allow your body to heal itself.
